I hope this doesn't come as a shock to you but the US fought a war against Mexico in 1846 and '47 and ending early in 1848. We won the war and obtained the land we now call Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada, parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Texas and all the land down to the Rio Grande was another fight.
For that war, President Polk set up a training and staging area for soldiers and cavalry just north of Cincinnati. It was called Camp Washington.
Camp Washington is still there - total population about 1,200. It once was home to the "Cincinnati Work House". This municipal jail was constructed in 1869 - an amazing architectural structure designed by local Samuel Hannaford. It was put on the National Register in 1980. It is now used as a drug rehab hospital.
The other huge landmark in the area is Camp Washington Chili parlor. Another Cincinnati institution but not yet on the National Register.
