RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

The readings at Catholic mass this weekend depend upon whether your local church is doing the ritual of Scrutinies for perspective Church members through the RCIA.  You are either hearing a story about the healing of a man bling from birth or the story of the return of the prodigal son.  Either story fits well with Lent.

The blind man in John's gospel was healed, given sight and believed.  He ignored criticism and ridicule and followed Jesus.  The Pharisees saw what happened but refused to believe.  Are we the Pharisees who have seen and been told what God has done but still do not believe, the ones who refuse to follow Jesus properly?

In Luke's story of the Prodigal Son, are we that son who has sinned and returns to God asking forgiveness and receiving it?  Or are we the other son, who does not sin but basks in God's goodness without being thankful?  Are we the son who is jealous?
