CINCINNATI

I believe the first church in Cincinnati proper was the First Presbyterian Church.  In 1790, the small congregation met in a meeting hall located on the north side of 4th and Main Streets.  The city, at that time, extended from the Ohio River to 4th Street.  Everything else beyond 4th was farm land.

The building was a wooden structure about 30' by 40' with a floor made of river boat planks and pews made of carved-out logs.  Surrounding the church was a cemetery.

In 1816, another congregation grew out of the First Presbyterian.  The Second Presbyterian congregation eventually located on Elm Street at 8th.  In 1875,  they built a beautiful Gothic-Style structure that stands today and is on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

In 1933, First Presbyterian merged with Covenant Presbyterian (formerly Second Presbyterian) and the congregation is now called Covenant-First Presbyterian Church.  They reside in Covenant's building.

A trip to see this beautiful church and take a tour is worthwhile!
