Well, just how far back does this reputation go? During our Civil War, the City of Nashville, Tennessee was having a terrible time with venereal disease (now we call it SDT) among the troops stationed there. The military decided the cure for their problem was to round up all the prostitutes and hookers they could find and send them up river.
They were put on a paddle-wheeler and here they came. They were not very welcome at several stops along the way. When they got to Cincinnati, the city fathers refused to let any of them off the boat. The paddle-wheeler turned around and headed back to Nashville. There, they legalized prostitution and eventually got things under control. They've been singin' those country music songs there ever since.
