RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

POETRY

You're a poet and don't know it but your feet show it; they're long fellows.   A little jingle from my past about poetry.  Do kids still chant it?

Have youngsters even heard of  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow?  One of his famous poems is "The Song of Hiawatha."  It's long - I won't copy it here.  You may recall the beginning: "By the shores of Gitche Gumee, by the shining Big-Sea-Water, ..."  It is narrative poetry based on rhythm and not rhyme; full of Indian words, foreign to our ears.

Hiawatha was the great leader of the Iroquois tribe/nation.  He welcomed the settlers from Europe into his home and listened to their stories including those about Jesus.  At the end, the settlers stay with the tribe and Hiawatha literally sails off into the sunset.

Here is a link to the poem.  It's not easy to read but, after three or four tries, you'll get the hang of it.  😂
