THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

This weekend at Catholic mass you will hear in the Gospel, the story of Martha and Mary, sisters who welcomed Jesus into their home.  In Luke's account of this event, we find that Martha took to heart the custom of welcoming a guest; cleaning the house, making some food, making the guest comfortable.  Her sister Mary did none of this but only sat a Jesus side listening to his every word.

Our first reaction is:  How selfish of Mary!  She let Martha do all the work.  Mary did not help Martha with work that had to be done.

Martha asked Jesus to admonish Mary and urge her to help with what needed to be done; to embarrass her if necessary.  Jesus said, "No."  He sided with the 'lazy' sister.

Yes, he sided with the 'lazy' sister because she was doing what was more important.  It's a lesson for us.  There is nothing more important than learning about God.  (There is a lot to learn)  It's more important than doing what is expected by cultural norms.  It's more important than anything of this world.  Peer pressure is out when it comes to God.  Never be embarrassed to take the side of the Lord.

My continual prayer is that I and those I love, learn more and more about God; because to know him is to love him.

Have a great weekend.  I love you.
