Yesterday, I offered the quotation of Jack London which begins "I would rather be ashes than dust!"
Today, I bring you the same sentiment wrapped in the context of softball which I played into my seventies. I contemplated this and expressed it many times.
"If you are coaching, remember that I don't want to die standing on third base when I could have scored and been the winning run. Send me home and I'll slide in a cloud of dust - taking my chances."
This reminds me of the famous sports bromide: "Better to have played and lost than to never have played the game."
I have always loved sports.
