SPIES

In the 1970s, I got on a kick of reading 'Spy" novels.  One right after the other; books by Robert Ludlum, Ken Follet, Graham Greene, Len Deighton and Frederick Forsyth were my favorites.  Of course, my all-time favorite movies were those of the James Bond series.

I only mention that because are read something the other day about international spying that piqued by interest.  It was a story about Five Eyes.  Maybe you've heard of it; I hadn't.

Five Eyes is an international spying organization; an alliance of five countries with common interests.  The United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have agreed to share information which they collect that can be described as signal intelligence.  Signal intelligence is information gleaned from intercepting foreign voice, text and other internet communications and from electronic sensors such as radar.

How secret an organization is it?   The alliance dates to the 1940s, right after World War II.  It was not common knowledge until a few years ago.   How did they keep this from the Press for so long?

These five nations are spying on people all over the world - all the time.  Not much can happen without one of the five knowing about it and sharing it with the other four.

Now, do you feel more or less secure?
